FAQ - Mobile TV

What is Mobile TV?

Mobile TV is a new channel for entertainment that utilises mobile phone infrastructure to deliver video direct to mobile phones.

Can all handsets (mobile phones) access it?

In general a 3G level mobile phone is required to receive streaming video. Some 2.5G technology can be used in a clip download scenario.

What is the cost for handsets to download a Mobile TV clip?

There are two types of solutions "out of portal" and "in portal".  Mobile TV delivered via out-of-portal solutions will incur the cost of the service itself AND the applicable data charges from the viewer's mobile phone provider. Programs delivered in-portal generally incur only the cost of the service itself. Data charges are either very low or are not levied at all.

Typically how large are the Mobile TV clips?

Files sizes depend on quality and the length of the content. As a rough guide, for downloaded clips; 300kb to 500Kb a minute.

Can I just take existing video content and convert it?

While this is possible technically, in order to provide a successful Mobile TV service the content must be made for mobile.  A combination of concept, production and technical expertise are all required to deliver quality Mobile TV content.  Altaine has expertise in all of these areas.

How many phones can access Mobile TV content?

In mature telco markets the number of phones that have the capability to access Mobile TV ranges between 10-25%. However, this number is growing rapidly and within the next 2-3 years Altaine expects that 75% of phones will be of the necessary level.
